The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts the IBPS PO (Probationary Officer) exam for recruitment in various public sector banks in India. The exam pattern typically consists of three stages these details are given below:

  1. Preliminary Exam:
    • Duration: 1 hour
    • Sections:
      • English Language: 30 questions, 30 marks
      • Quantitative Aptitude: 35 questions, 35 marks
      • Reasoning Ability: 35 questions, 35 marks
    • Total: 100 questions, 100 marks
    • Note: The preliminary exam is a qualifying stage. The marks scored in this stage are not counted towards the final selection but are used to shortlist candidates for the Mains exam.
  2. Mains Exam:
    1. Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
    2. Sections:
      • Reasoning & Computer Aptitude: 45 questions, 60 marks
      • General/Economy/Banking Awareness: 40 questions, 40 marks
      • English Language: 35 questions, 40 marks
      • Data Analysis & Interpretation: 35 questions, 60 marks
      • Descriptive Paper: 2 questions (Essay and Letter Writing), 25 marks
    3. Total: 155 questions, 200 marks (plus 25 marks for the descriptive paper)
    4. Note: The Mains exam is an objective-type test, while the descriptive paper is conducted separately and is evaluated separately.
  3. Interview:
    1. Duration: Typically around 15-20 minutes
    2. Marks: 100 marks
    3. Note: Only candidates who clear the Mains exam are called for the interview. The final selection is based on the combined score of the Mains exam and the interview.

Additional Points:

  • There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in both the Preliminary and Mains exams.
  • The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in the Mains exam and the interview, with the interview score considered as part of the overall assessment.
